Cole’s always had this weird fascination with fire since he was a little boy, including anything with sparks (firecrackers, fireworks, explosions, etc). It’s also been a problem as he’s always finding different ways of setting things on fire, stealing people’s lighters, and getting into trouble with his dad and the sometimes the law. It wasn’t until he turned sixteen that his powers had decided to suddenly kick in, almost killing him in the process after a heated argument with his father. He nearly blew up the whole living room, singeing the couch pretty bad and had been sent to the hospital. After a while, Cole had begun experiencing his powers in a number of different ways, all while he was either angry, scared, surprised or incredibly happy. It took him a while to keep himself from flailing his hands around, his hands being the most responsive to his powers.
After dragging himself through high school and graduation (he failed some classes), Burt had suggested a school that would better help Cole’s unique abilities, the very same school that his older brother Kurt had gone to. It didn’t take very much convincing for Cole to agree, he’d always wanted to go overseas and if this place was going to help him learn to control his pyrokinesis, then he’d give it a shot. Plus, it was even better that he’d get to be around his brother again.
